9/11/2001 was such an outlier in scale that I don't think it's fair to include in death toll. But the basic message of number of attacks is still that they happened less under Democratic presidents than other Republicans.

Let every one of the people in Congress who want to cut this program feed themselves and their families on the amount of money currently allotted to the same-size family were they on SNAP. And let them shop, by the way, at the same stores, in the same neighborhoods, as they would have to do were they on this program, the ones in their districts. After three months of this, using no additional funds for eating (and yes, that includes at functions where food is served during fundraising, Congressional activities, etc...your constituents don't get that privilege!) let us know if you think your constituents on this program really should do with even less than that. Next, if you want to see how the "real world" lives, shall we see how you do without your medical care?

I think more than looking at cuts or adding funds, they need to reevaluate how the current food stamps are allocated. A family of four doesn't need $600 a month in groceries, but that's what they can get through food stamps. If families are going to get food stamps, I think they should also have classes on how to shop on a budget, or there should be more restrictions on what they can buy...no candy, soda, etc. Food stamps should be used to promote better health. No one should have to live on only beans and rice, but everyone can learn how to spend money wisely.

The majority of guns sales - ALL new guns sales - go through FFL licensed dealers and require a NICS background check. There are tons of firearms out there in private hands, but a lot of them are older types/styles (like revolvers) that are not very popular with crooks and gang bangers.

The real problem is that background checks without a national registry is pretty useless. We object to a national registry because that would be the prelude to seizure of private firearms. And anyway, background checks and registration are not particularly effective in preventing crime.

LIfe begins at exception? Who says?

Abortion is a moral wrong but should allow for exceptions for the life and health of the mother, rape, incest, and the reasonable lack of viability of the fetus after full-term birth. With these exceptions, we need the government out of these private and personal issues to allow women with their doctors and families to make their own difficult decisions. Preach morality all you want but do not make the government enforce it in these very sensitive and personal areas.

Clearly, this is an extreme and untenable position, hardly worth commenting on. What you don't acknowledge is that the liberal perspective tends to be equally extreme in its failure to acknowledge that at some point, the fetus IS a human being and we have to reckon with that as well.

Each side is absolutistic in its position and thus it's hard for society to negotiate a reasonable solution. Protecting women's reproductive rights is important AND at some point the fetus is a human being, warranting consideration. Both sides are partially right and treat their partial truth as the whole truth.

While it's easy to make fun of the conservatives, we overlook that the liberal perspective is equally myopic and thus equally part of the problem.
