It is a traitor’s flag

On the subject of whether people should fly what has become known as the Confederate Flag.

I grew up in Northern Virginia, where this flag originated. This is the Confederate Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, Robert E. Lee’s Army, it was not a symbol of the Confederacy as a nation. When Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in April of 1865 it was understood this symbol would not be unfurled again. Lee understood that his officers understood that and his soldiers understood that.

It was adopted 100 years later as a racist symbol by anti-segregationists in the 1960’s.

It was a symbol of division when it first appeared, it was a symbol of division when racists adopted it, and it is still a symbol of division.

It is a symbol of a failed rebellion against the Constitution and against the United States of America. You cannot fly it, or march with it and call yourself a patriot.

The bulk of the Officer Corps of the Confederate States of America had sworn an oath as officers in the United States Army, as such, they violated their sacred oaths and duty when they joined the Confederate Army. They were not heroes they were traitors to their oaths and to their country.

I don’t recall seeing any statues of General Benedict Arnold in any town squares.
