Jason N. Barfield

LCpl Jason N. Barfield, 22, of Ashford, Ala., died Oct. 24 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.  He was assigned to 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif.

LCpl Barfield is remembered as a man with a positive attitude and infectious smile.

Shirley Cobb, Barfield’s aunt, reportedly told the Dothan Eagle while on a surprise visit home over Christmas last year, he talked about his life as a Marine and about his duty to his country.

“He said, ‘This is my job, I’ve got to go do my job. I hate that it’s in Afghanistan, but that’s my job,’” she said. “You know these boys go over there and fight, and he knew it was taking a chance. He said that the last time he was here. It’s just a terrible feeling for (us).”

The newspaper article linked to footage of Barfield returning home to surprise his family last December. Read the story and watch the video here.

GOTP Getting Too ‘Extreme’ To Win Election

According to the Huffington Post, televangelist Pat Robertson said on his show “The 700 Club,” that the Republican Tea Party (GOTP) has become a bit too extreme.

Robertson reportedly quoted Lyndon Johnson when he found himself being pushed from the moderate center, “Don’t these people realize that if they push me over to an extreme position, I’ll lose the election?”

Robertson said if candidates venture into heavily radical territory, it could cost Republicans the general election.

“Those people in the Republican primary have got to lay off of this stuff,” he exclaimed. “If they want to lose, this is the game for losers.”

This should be a clarion wake up call to the GOTP contenders; you know you’ve gone too far into weeds when Pat Robertson says you’ve become too extreme to win.

Latest 2012 Presidential Polls – 25 Oct 11 Edition

A new CBS News poll conducted 19 – 24 Oct 11 has been released concerning the Republican Tea Party (GOTP) nominating circus; the current poll results are:

Herman “Pizza Man” Cain 25; Mittens Romney 21; Newter Gingrich 10; Ronny Paul 8; Reverend Rick Perry 6; Michele “Krazy” Bachmann 2; Jon “I can’t believe it’s not butter” Huntsman and Ricky “The Ric” Santorum 1

The GOTP Comedy of Errors continues and the Pizza Man continues to lead in the polls, having bounced back to the top, which has got to be driving Mittens absolutely crazy – but this is what happens when you get in a hissy slap fest with Perry. Speaking of Reverend Ricky, he’s plummeted into the realm of bottom dwelling mud suckers flying past Paul, while Newter is apparently enjoying some buoyancy from acting like the only adult in the room during the last GOTP debate; Krazy’s hanging in there in her rubber room of political purgatory only one point higher in the polls than Huntsman and Santorum.

In Iowa, a new Univ. of Iowa poll conducted 12 – 19 Oct 11: Cain 37; Romney 27; Paul 12; Gingrich 9; Bachmann 8; Perry 7; Santorum 4 and Huntsman 2 …

In New Hampshire, the Insider Advantage poll conducted 16 Oct 11 shows Mittens’ lead being cut into a little by Cain; poll results: Mittens 39; Cain 24; Paul 11; Gingrich, Huntsman and Bachmann 5; Perry 2 and Santorum and Huntsman 0 …

In South Carolina, the Insider Advantage poll conducted 16 Oct 11 shows the “Pizza Man” jumping way out ahead of Mittens: Cain 32; Romney 16; Perry 12; Gingrich 8; Paul 7; Bachmann 6; Huntsman 1 and Santorum 0 …

In Florida, the Insider Advantage poll shows Mittens holding on: Romney 33; Cain 30; Gingrich 12; Perry and Paul 3; Bachmann 2; Huntsman and Santorum 0 …

In Nevada, the PPP (D) poll conducted from 20 – 23 Oct 11 shows Mittens barely leading: Romney 29; Cain 28; Gingrich 15; Paul 7; Perry 6; Bachmann 3; Huntsman and Santorum 2 …

In the five states with the lead off primaries or caucuses Romney leads Cain 3-2 – but barely; last week I thought Cain couldn’t maintain his top ranking (Latest 2012 Presidential Polls 20 Oct 11 Edition); if he can maintain his momentum it will begin to become harder and harder for Romney to pull off the nomination – I still think it’s highly doubtful Cain can stay on top, except for the Mormon factor amongst Evangelical Christians. Gingrich is the surprise right now having floated upwards into the middle of the polling; Newter’s biggest problems are his infidelity and his tendency to come across as a snotty Little Lord Fauntleroy.

According to the new Associated Press/GfK poll conducted 13 – 17 Oct 11, if the general election were held today:

President Obama 48/Romney 45

President Obama 49/Cain 43

President Obama 51/Perry 42

In a Rasmussen Reports poll from 13 Oct 11:

President Obama 49/Gingrich 34

And no one else matters because none of the remaining candidates has a snow ball’s chance of ever winning the GOTP nomination but at least they’re providing entertainment …

If the GOTP clown car had finally stopped spinning, and the general election was held today, the Pizza Man would once again be the GOTP candidate, and once again he would have lost to President Obama.

Jordan S. Bastean

Marine Lance Cp1. Jordan S. Bastean, who knew as a 15-year-old freshman that he wanted to be a Marine, was killed Sunday while serving in Afghanistan.

“I’ll tell you that I knew him for four years, and he was the son that we all wish we had,” Chief Warrant Officer Jerry Becker, the main instructor for Pekin Community High School’s JROTC program, said Monday. “He was very mature for his age. He was very responsible and respectful. I give all credit to his parents.”

Bastean, 19, was killed Sunday while “conducting combat operations in the Helmand province,” which is in the southwestern portion of the country, according to a Department of Defense news release.

Edward Bastean, Jordan’s uncle, said that from an early age his nephew wanted to be in the military. He had a second love – big trucks.

“Oh, he always loved big trucks. From the time he was a tiny baby, until this week,” he said when reached Monday evening. “Some, you would need a ladder to get up into them.”

But he was more than that, the family said in a statement.

“Jordan was gentle and humble and eager to dive in and get dirty with whatever life dealt him. His bravery will be remembered, but so will his honest smile and his keen sense of humor.”

The 2010 Pekin Community High School graduate was an assaultman with 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Third Battalion deployed last month to Sangin, a city in the Helmand Province said to be a Taliban stronghold. No details were available on Bastean’s death, and officials with 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines Regiment could not be reached Monday evening.

Condolences and prayers were posted on Bastean’s Facebook page beginning early Monday and throughout the day. On pages for his friends, they also mourned his passing. Many changed their profile picture to a photo of Jordan to show their support.

“We are in shock. Jordan was a joy, and this tragedy has hit hard,” Edward Bastean wrote in an email. “Honestly, this news has left us numb and confused. As a family, we are trying to pull together for his mom and dad and for each other.

“Jordan would want us to unite in order to figure out how we are going to get through this together; he was always a peacemaker,” he said.

Bastean was a member of the school’s cross country team, had a blue belt in karate and also participated and eventually led the JROTC’s rifle team.

Robert Stoor, a junior at Pekin Community High School and who was in JROTC with Bastean, said the class was quiet Monday.

“No one really wanted to talk about it. Our master sergeant took it hard. It was a time of sadness in the classroom,” he said.

Becker remembers Bastean as a “very patriotic young man” and someone who knew what he wanted.

“From the time I met him, he wanted to be a U.S. Marine. We affectionately called him Jarhead because he had a haircut like a Marine,” Becker said.

But beyond the dream of being a Marine, Becker remembers Bastean as an example to the younger cadets. He volunteered to help train younger students after he graduated. He was always willing to step up to help with training, or volunteering. He put others before himself, Becker said.

The instructor was off Monday and found out about Bastean through an email alert system for faculty. The retired solider saw Bastean about two months before he deployed to Afghanistan.

“I take solace in knowing that he was well trained and ready to go, but at the same time, he was a great American. I’ll miss him dearly.”

Paul A. Rivera

SGT Paul A. Rivera grew up playing with Micro Machines and video games with his best friend Nick Carmona.

Their favorites were first-person shooters, but they also enjoyed sports games.

“He would always school me on Madden,” Carmona said.

The Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks inspired the two to join the military as soon as they were old enough. Rivera joined the Army, Carmona the Air Force.

“The games we used to play had just become reality,” Carmona said.

SGT Rivera was killed Saturday in Logar province, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained when the vehicle he was traveling in was attacked and rolled over, according to a Pentagon statement. He was 26.

Rivera was assigned to the 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, based in Hohenfels, Germany.

His family was not available for comment Monday.

Rivera joined the military after graduating in 2003 from Stony Point High School.

“He was funny, he was charismatic, he was a genuine person, he was kind-hearted,” said Carmona, 22, who is a senior airman.

Rivera was also deeply religious.

“He was constantly praying and did everything by the book. He left everything in God’s hands,” Carmona said.

The two kept in close contact and last corresponded via Facebook 11 days before Rivera was killed.

“I could tell he wanted to come back home, but the soldier that he was, he didn’t let other people see that,” Carmona said.

“It hurts me a lot because I didn’t get to say, ‘I love you,’ to him; I just said, ‘I’ll talk to you later, man.'”

Funeral arrangements are pending.

I Don’t Think I Ever Said That?

The Huffington Post is reporting that Republican Tea Party (GOTP) presidential wanabee worse than anyone else Michele “Krazy” Bachmann, who in early October introduced a bill in the House of Representatives that would force women to listen to the fetal heartbeat before having an abortion, made the surprising comment in Iowa recently that abortion bans should be left up to the states.

“I think that’s referring to late-term abortion, and I think that’s something that most people find anathema, and they would prefer to see it outlawed,” she told the Iowa Republican in response to a question about abortion bans. “That’s a state issue, and so it’s up to the people of Iowa to decide what they want to do.”

It appears that along with her high heel induced migraines she may also be suffering from short term memory loss, not more than a week later, Krazy denied ever having had the conversation, despite the video of her comments that was posted online.

“I don’t think I ever said that, that a late-term abortion ban is a state issue,” Bachmann told blogger Shane Vander Hart in a phone interview on Saturday. “I don’t ever recall anything about that. I don’t recall a question about that. I’ve always been absolutely unequivocal about [abortion being a federal issue]. They should contact the campaign before they post something like that, because that is not true.”

Krazy seems to be reeling from some sort of out of body experience – perhaps she’s feeling Herman Cain’s pain after his recent gaffe about abortion not being a government issue. But Bachmann – unlike Cain – told the blogger, she’s strong, consistent and decisive on pro-life matters.

Voters “get an idea of the person, and then they pull back the layers,” she told Vander Hart. “Then they find out another candidate really isn’t pro-life. The more people find out where the candidates truly are standing, the more I’m confident that people will choose me as their nominee.”

This is the problem with Michele Bachmann, as it was for Sarah Palin and many GOTP political types; she spews out whatever she thinks the current listener wants to hear, and then moves on oblivious to the fact in today’s modern world of technology someone might have taped the conversation.  Krazy’s grasping at whatever straws she can find to keep her name out there for the uber-conservative evangelical vote, she just won’t admit that she’s done – she’s the Ross Perot of this campaign, and when she can’t win the GOTP nomination she’ll be the one who’ll most likely try a third party run.
