   The majority of guns sales – ALL new guns sales – go through FFL licensed dealers and require a NICS background check. There are tons of firearms out there in private hands, but a lot of them are older types/styles (like revolvers) that are not very popular with crooks and gang bangers.

   The real problem is that background checks without a national registry is pretty useless. We object to a national registry because that would be the prelude to seizure of private firearms. And anyway, background checks and registration are not particularly effective in preventing crime.
