Just a thought …

For the first time in the history

During the Vietnam War, Secretary of Defense Hagel served in the 9th Infantry Division from 1967 to 1968, reaching the rank of sergeant. He received two Purple Hearts, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He served in the same infantry squad as his brother, and they saved each other’s lives on different occasions.

Of the Republican Tea Party (GOTP) Senators who filibustered his nomination as Secretary of Defense 32 of the 43 have never served a day in uniform – not one day; of those who have two were/are JAG officers – not exactly combat duty – three served less than a year and were discharged, and only one is a fellow Vietnam Combat Veteran with Hagel.

Served – Lindsey Graham, Roger Wicker, Dan Coats, Jim Inhofe, Mitch McConnell, Mike Enzi, Johnny Isakson, Mark Kirk, John McCain, Pat Roberts and Jeff Sessions

Never served – John Cornyn, John Thune, John Barrasso, Roy Blunt, Jerry Moran, Richard Shelby, Jeff Flake, John Boozman, Marco Rubio, Saxby Chambliss, Mike Crapo, Jim Risch, Chuck Grassley, Jerry Moran, Rand Paul, David Vitter, Deb Fischer, Dean Heller, Kelly Ayotte, Jeffrey Chiesa, Richard Burr, John Hoeven, Rob Portman, Tom Coburn, Pat Toomey, Tim Scott, Lamar Alexander, Bob Corker, Ted Cruz, Orrin Hatch, Mike Lee and Ron Johnson.

To their immense credit, Susan Collins, Thad Cochran, Mike Johanns and Lisa Murkowski voted against their party’s filibuster.

It’s never surprising to see how the far-right always manages to have war hawks who have never served, and yet who will criticize the service of those who have.

If Not Now, When?

I’m sitting here wondering what kind of bloody massacre will happen in this country before members of Congress do the right thing?

How many first graders will have to have their bodies ripped into shreds in their classrooms before Congress decides some weapons and magazines should not be generally available?

There are times when I’m ashamed of those who serve in Washington, and this is definitely one of those times.

Shame on Congress, but especially shame on the Democratic leadership for not putting up a fight. Shame on Senator Harry Reid, and the other weak kneed members of the Senate (Democratic and Republican); you’re cowards and don’t deserve the high honor to serve.

If you’re not going to ever fight the tough fights, step down and let someone step up who will, as Lawrence O’Donnell once said, “Some things are worth fighting for, even if you lose.”

Romney claims releasing his tax returns would violate his religious privacy?

Republican Tea Party (GOTP) presidential wannabe Willard Mitt Romney’s come up with yet another excuse for not releasing his tax records to do so he claims would violate his religious privacy.

“Our church doesn’t publish how much people have given,” Romney recently told Parade magazine. “This is done entirely privately. One of the downsides of releasing one’s financial information is that this is now all public, but we had never intended our contributions to be known. It’s a very personal thing between ourselves and our commitment to our God and to our church.”

Yeah, well that’s all very nice, except it’s a load of garbage. For one thing, everyone already knows how much he’s donated to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, well at least for one year, because he’s already released one of his returns – well at least part of one, so his whole, “It’s a very personal thing between ourselves and our commitment to our God and to our church,” doesn’t exactly fit this running for president scenario.

Of course if Romney’s claim had any religious validity to it, then why did his father release twelve years worth of tax records when he ran for the Republican nomination in 1968, which by-the-way detailed how much he’d given to the Church during those years?

Then there’s also the point another politically prominent member of the Church, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s called on Romney to release his tax records, as has Jon Huntsman Sr., who reportedly publicly told Willard he needs to release his returns so he can be “square with the American people.”

It’s indeed time for Romney to “be square with the American people”, and to man up and release his returns, that is if he wants the whole mess to go away and if he has any serious – or at least rational – thoughts of becoming president. The American people have grown weary of secrets, especially from conservative elitists who think we can’t handle the truth and to trust them because they know what’s best. Paging “Brother” Romney, the transparency bus is outside honking its horn, get on, or get out of the way for serious candidates who aren’t afraid of letting the voters see their tax records.

Priebus says Reid’s a “dirty liar”?

The blogosphere is a buzz with Republican Tea Party (GOTP) National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus’ manly attack on United States Senator Harry Reid on Sunday, while attempting to defend GOTP presidential wonder boy Willard Mitt Romney’s reluctance to release any tax records, at one point calling the Senate majority leader a “dirty liar” for his accusation Willard hasn’t paid any taxes for more than ten years.

“As far as Harry Reid is concerned, listen, I know you might want to go down that road. I’m not going to respond to a dirty liar,” Priebus told ABC’s “This Week” host George Stephanopoulos. “If that’s on the agenda, I’m not going go there. This is just a made-up issue,” Priebus declared while prancing down the very road he claimed he wasn’t going to go down.

“You’re saying you’re not going to go down that road?” Stephanopoulos responded. “You just called him a dirty liar. You stand by that — you think Harry Reid is a dirty liar?”

“I just said it,” Priebus said.

Senator Reid has said he’d heard from an early Bain Capital investor who claimed Willard didn’t pay taxes for a decade; and while an ever increasing number of politicians on both sides of the aisle are calling on Romney to release more of his tax returns so as to dispel the rumor, Priebus continued to respond.

“I think this president has a problem with the American dream,” he mewed. “That he would trot out Harry Reid and try to divide this country and spread this division and hatred, it’s ridiculous, it’s wrong, it’s untrue.”

Democratic National Committee Chair Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said Romney could end all the discussion by releasing his returns.

“I do know that Mitt Romney could clear this up in 10 seconds by releasing the 23 years of tax returns that he gave to John McCain when he was being vetted for vice president, ” Wasserman Schultz said. “Because one year of tax returns, like he’s released, could just be for show.”

When Senator Reid went to the floor of the Senate this past week making his accusations, fellow Senator John McCain sat nearby; McCain has in his possession 23 years worth of Romney’s tax records, records he presumably looked at in 2008 while vetting Willard for his possible VP choice, and yet Senator McCain didn’t stand and dispute Reid’s claim. It’s all becoming “curiouser and curiouser!”

Payroll tax extender bill unvieled?

Senate Democrats have stepped up and released a bill to extend and expand on the payroll tax cut that would otherwise expire at the end of this year.

The Middle Class Tax Cut act, S. 1917, would cut the employee and employer payroll tax to 3.1 percent, half of the 6.2 percent tax they would normally face. The bill applies this cut to the first $5 million in payroll for companies, which Senate Democrats estimate will cut payroll taxes in half for 98 percent of U.S. companies with payroll below that cap.

The bill also includes a “surtax on millionaires,” which applies a 3.25 percent tax on modified adjusted gross income over $1 million or $500,000 for a married individual filing separately. This tax would take effect in 2013.

Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) is the chief sponsor of the bill, which is also co-sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.).

Democratic leaders said they’d look to take up the tax bill soon, but had not scheduled any votes on the bill as of Monday night.

While the Republican Tea Party (GOTP) do-nothing House has wasted an entire year with grandstanding tactics like reading the Constitution, validating that our nation’s motto is “In God We Trust”, and introducing more than 100 bills aimed at limiting abortion; the Democratic Senate has introduced a bill aimed at helping Americans during a recession, cutting taxes to those of us who need them cut, and raising taxes on those who can easily afford an increase and who’ve benefited far too long on everyone else’s backs; it doesn’t bode well for a GOTP that ran on “jobs” and which has produced zero.
