Romney’s a states-rights candidate?

Another hypocrite from the right has spun up his presidential campaign. Grand Old Tea Party (GOTP) presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has ridiculed President Barack Obama’s health care law — modeled closely after the one Mitt signed into law as the governor of Massachusetts — as a “misguided” and “egregious” effort to seize more power for Washington.

“Obamacare is bad law, bad policy, and it is bad for America’s families,” Romney declared, vowing to repeal it if he were ever in a position to do so.

That’s pretty bold talk from a political has been who will never be allowed to get any closer to the Republican nomination in 2012 than Hillary Clinton can.

Talking about his own Massachusetts health care law, Romney claimed the solution for the unique problems of one state isn’t the right prescription for the nation as a whole.

“Our experiment wasn’t perfect — some things worked, some didn’t, and some things I’d change,” Romney said.

Oh, so Romney’s health care law in Massachusetts was an experiment? That’s how he ran the state as governor? As a political laboratory trying things out in case he wanted to use them later?

“One thing I would never do is to usurp the constitutional power of states with a one-size-fits-all federal takeover.” Romney said: “The federal government isn’t the answer for running health care anymore than it’s the answer for running Amtrak or the post office.”

First, since when did Mitt Romney become a states-rights candidate? What’s next he’ll put a confederate flag license plate on his car? Second, what do you mean the federal government isn’t the answer for running the post office? I’ll have you know Mitt that the founding fathers set it up that way, and Benjamin Franklin was the first Post Master General. You wouldn’t be claiming to be smarter than the revered founders would you? I don’t think people in the GOTP cotton much to that kind of talk. Especially from a carpet bagger like yourself.

Romney’s Tea Party states-rights pitch is one GOTP primary voters are likely to hear over the next year as he tries to persuade them to overlook his flaws because – in his mind – he’s the strongest Republican to challenge Obama on the country’s top issue — the economy.

And what if the economy continues to improve? Holy cow, then what will he do? If the economy is his one thing he thinks he can challenge the President on good luck with that. What will Middle America think when he’s exposed as a big business, let’s export American jobs candidate that he is?

The challenge for Romney isn’t just the similarities between his 2006 health care law and the current federal law but that Romney’s universal coverage law has a more sweeping mandate for people to get insurance than exists in Obama’s law — and penalizes the uninsured more severely. Romney’s law requires individuals, with a few exceptions, to obtain health insurance, and those who fail to do so have a $219 tax exemption withheld from them.

The big albatross hanging around Romney’s neck though is all the praise Democrats are heaping on him for his efforts in Massachusetts.

The President praised the efforts in Massachusetts during a meeting with governors at the White House, saying: “I agree with Mitt Romney, who recently said he’s proud of what he accomplished on health care by giving states the power to determine their own health care solutions. He’s right.”

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, an Obama friend, said Romney deserves a lot of credit on health care. “One of the best things he did was to be the co-author of our health care reform, which has been a model for national health care reform,” he said.

Of course the amusing thing with the Democrat praise is that it provides plenty of fodder for his GOTP primary opponents; some of whom are already opening up with pre-emptive campaign salvos.

One presumptive candidate, and someone who understands hypocrisy all too well, Mike Huckabee says in his new book: “If our goal in health care reform is better care at lower cost, then we should take a lesson from RomneyCare, which shows that socialized medicine does not work.”

Another GOTP likely candidate, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, threw Romney under the bus with a late great liberal icon when he said, “Senator (Edward M.) Kennedy and Governor Romney and then Governor Patrick, if that’s what Massachusetts wants, we’re happy for them. We don’t want that. That’s not good for us.”

Healthcare aside, his candidacy isn’t likely to last any longer than it did in 2008 when it was torpedoed by Huckabee’s disparaging remarks about Romney being a Mormon. The GOTP is so heavily weighted by extreme right wing born again Christians that it isn’t going to back a Mormon anytime soon; and if they were ever to be honest most of them would probably say they’d rather see a “foreign born Muslim” in the White House than one of those Mormons.

Huckabee Attacks Portman, Then Beats a Hasty Retreat?

Once again Mike Huckleberry opens mouth, inserts foot, and attempts to run away on one leg. During an interview with right wing conservative radio host Michael Medved, the former Arkansas governor, and quickly becoming non-potential 2012 presidential hopeful, slammed recent academy award winner Natalie Portman for supposedly “glamorizing unwed pregnancy.”

Portman is expecting her first child with her fiancé, Benjamin Millepied, a choreographer whom she met on the set of “Black Swan.” During her acceptance speech, Portman thanked Millepied for “the most wonderful gift,” their baby.

The FOX PAC talking face took issue with that statement, and the entire premise of her pregnancy, calling Portman’s pregnancy “troubling” and suggesting it might “glorify and glamorize” the idea of having children outside of marriage. He claimed, as only a southern white male right wing conservative Christian tool can, that most single mothers aren’t in the same position as Portman in terms of her lifestyle and resources.

“There aren’t really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie,” Huckabee said. “And I think it gives a distorted image … Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that’s the story that we’re not seeing.”

Of course most single teenage moms aren’t the daughter of Alaska’s governor either, being able to have their baby on the state’s dime and all; but, Mr. Hucksabee never seemed to have a problem with that pregnancy.

The “reverend” continued his assault on Portman saying, “One of the things that’s troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, ‘Hey look, you know, we’re having children, we’re not married, but we’re having these children, and they’re doing just fine.’ But there aren’t really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie. And I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses. Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock,” Huckalee continued. “You know, right now, 75 percent of black kids in this country are born out of wedlock. 61 percent of Hispanic kids — across the board, 41 percent of all live births in America are out of wedlock births. And the cost of that is simply staggering.”

But wait people, this was all a big mistake! Just like he never meant to imply anything about President Obama’s citizenship by claiming he was raised in Kenya, Hucksbees is now defending his comments on Portman, insisting he wasn’t trying to “slam” or “attack” her.

“Natalie is an extraordinary actor, very deserving of her recent Oscar and I am glad she will marry her baby’s father,” he said. “My comments were about the statistical reality that most single moms are very poor, under-educated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death. That’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that society often glorifies and glamorizes the idea of having children out of wedlock.”

Yeah, that makes your “non-attack” on Portman ever so much better. Thanks for clarifying that you weren’t attacking her, just all those “other” unwed mothers.

Huckles said he was actually “glad” Portman was planning to marry Benjamin Millepied, the father of her child, and that his comments weren’t meant to be deprecating.

“However, contrary to what the Hollywood media reported, I did not ‘slam’ or ‘attack’ Natalie Portman, nor did I criticize the hardworking single mothers in our country,” he claimed.

Ah yes, of course, the self-righteous diet expert was in no way attacking those hardworking single moms who get pregnant, just those slovenly non-working moms of color; you know the ones. The ones Huckleberry said were birthing the “75 percent of black kids … born out of wedlock” and the “61 percent of Hispanic kids.”

Please governor, whatever you do, don’t shut your pie hole. Every time you open it you’re just making it clearer and clearer how you’ve no business thinking you’d ever be a good fit in the Oval Office, and you’re continually giving us all a clear look into the hypocrisy which is the GOTP. No doubt you will always unflinchingly attack the “liberal” Hollywood hoes for being unwed mothers, while always giving the good right wing unwed mothers, like Bristol Palin, a pass.  It makes you wonder though how Huckabee would’ve treated a pregnant unwed, unemployed, betrothed mother from Galilee doesn’t it?

The Newt prepares for likely White House bid?

Newt Gingrich is preparing to launch his bid for the GOTP nomination in 2012; the problem? Well? He’s the Newt.

Gingrich, who is a twice-divorced former U.S. House speaker, who has admitted an affair with a former congressional aide, who is now his third wife; whose career in Congress is remembered as much for his dramatic fall — two federal government shutdowns, his censure and the loss of Republican seats in the House — as his rise, and whose polarizing style quite frequently leaves voters not just cold, but ice cold, has a problem.

What’s the problem you ask? He appears – as do many Republican leaders – to lack a moral compass, even though he claims to be a god-fearing Christian, and to support the far right conservative mantra of “family values”, and that’s going to be very problematic as he runs for the office he once tried to remove President Clinton from for doing exactly what he was doing, cheating on his wife.

While President Clinton’s affair was bad enough, Newt’s was not just an affair; it was an affair while leading the effort to impeach a President, for well, having an affair. But whereas President Clinton’s affair was seen as a slight at the American people, having had a sexual encounter with an intern in the Oval Office, Newt’s affair is much more nefarious, having occurred while his wife was fighting for her life in a battle with cancer. Same sort of “honoring” of marriage vows which sank former Democratic Presidential aspirant John Edwards.

The biggest obstacle in his way, the biggest issue – or problem – with his affair is going to be the fringe of the GOTP – the self-righteous, white bread, Christian Tea Party folks – who any Vegas bookie will tell you probably are not going to be willing to overlook adultery any time soon. After all, adultery is not just some little sin. It’s not just an indiscretion. It’s a pretty big deal.

For those who think the likelihood of Newt’s past following him into any run for the White House is little to non-existent, look no further than last week, when during a speech at the University of Pennsylvania a student confronted him about the affair.

“I’ve had a life which, on occasion, has had problems,” Gingrich replied. “I believe in a forgiving God, and the American people will have to decide whether that’s their primary concern.”

I’m quite certain the voters will decide Newter. They will decide not just loudly but also clearly. Don’t think so? Well listen to this quote.

“Newt Gingrich’s election would send a terrible signal to anyone who’s working to live a morally upright life,” said Jerry Luquire, head of the Georgia Christian Coalition. “I would find it very hard to vote for him.”

That’s not just any voter Mr. Speaker, that’s a right wing Christian from your own state. From your own state Newty!

But, let’s not be too hasty turning Newt over to the voters, first he’ll have to survive the primary process against his fellow GOTP rivals. Huckleberry isn’t about to pass up an opportunity to skewer him with his past sins, and we already know how Queen Sarah feels about him, not to mention Mitt, and whomever else thinks now is the ideal time to run.

Political fact is, Newt’s political career was over when he resigned as Speaker under a cloud of scandal and failure; it’s time to fade away Newt, time to fade away. Oh, and please, don’t talk about family values, Americans – as a whole – will only support hypocrisy just so far, and you crossed that line a long time ago.

Huckleberry claims Obama grew up in Kenya?

So, it appears former Arkansas Governor, and FOX PAC hack, Mike Huckabee said in a radio interview that President Barack Obama’s childhood in Kenya shaped his worldview?

Does Huckleberry understand the President didn’t visit Kenya until he was in his 20s? Or has he simply taken a long draft of birther Kool-aid?

Apparently during an interview with New York radio station WOR on Monday the “self promoting” potential Republican – or Grand Old Tea Party (GOTP) – presidential candidate told his interviewer that the President’s youth led him to resent the West, which he said explains why, in Huckabee’s view, Obama’s foreign policy differs so greatly from that of his predecessors.

“One thing that I do know is his having grown up in Kenya, his view of the Brits, for example, (is) very different than the average American,” Huckabee said, pointing to Obama’s decision in 2009 to remove a bust of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill from the Oval Office.

Of course the “Huckster” failed to note that President Obama replaced the Oval Office fixture with a bust of one of his American heroes, President Abraham Lincoln, and moved the Churchill bust to the White House residence.

“The bust of Winston Churchill, a great insult to the British,” Huckabee said. “But then if you think about it, his perspective as growing up in Kenya with a Kenyan father and grandfather. He probably grew up hearing that the British were a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather.”

We’re really going to keep bringing up the Churchill bust? Huckles let me help you with something. This isn’t World War II.  Great Britain wasn’t offended by the President’s actions; in fact, the only people offended by this were the uber right talking heads of FOX PAC and talk radio.

Regarding his Kenya comments, in true GOTP staff style, the executive director of Huckabee’s political action committee said the former governor simply misspoke about the President’s upbringing.

“When the governor mentioned he wanted to know more about the president, he wasn’t talking about the president’s place of birth — the governor believes the president was born in Hawaii,” Hogan Gidley said. “The governor would, however, like to know more about where President Obama’s liberal policies come from and what else the president plans to do to this country — as do most Americans.”

Ah yes, of course that’s what he meant. Excuse me?

Apparently GOTP candidates and staffers really do believe voters are stupid and will buy whatever they claim. Mr. Gidley, what do you take us all for? Unfortunately for you, and your boss, we don’t all watch FOX PAC, and we don’t all spend our days having our minds turned to pabulum listening to Rush, Hannity et al. Huckleberry meant to say Kenya. He meant to make the connection of “foreigner” in the White House; “African” in the White House; “Muslim” in the White House. He meant to pander to the Tea Party/Birther types on the fringe, and this is just one more example of why he’s not ready for the prime time and why he’s not presidential.

Palin Broke State Election Laws, and Won’t Prostitute Herself?

So, former Alaskan governor Palin broke state election laws in her 2006 gubernatorial campaign and was consumed by petty grievances up until she resigned?

Wow, who would’ve ever guessed any of that?

These accusations come from one of Palin’s closest former aides Frank Bailey who is writing a book about his time with the Ice Queen, the contents of which were leaked to the media and widely circulated on Friday.

The whole, sordid, nasty, open and revealing conglomeration opens with an account of Palin sending Bailey a message saying “I hate this damn job” shortly before she resigned as Alaska’s governor in July 2009, less than three years into her four-year term.

She hated her job? I find that hard to believe. What she hated was having her hind parts handed to her by the likes of Katie Couric, and then being sent back to the oblivion of the Great White North after an embarrassing run as McCain’s VP choice.

Bailey, who joined Palin’s 2006 campaign for governor and became part of her inner circle, has never before told his version of the Palin story. He wrote in the book that he and his co-authors put together the manuscript with the help of more than 60,000 e-mails he sent or received while working for Palin. In his writing, he reveals Palin, as a candidate for governor, penning letters-to-the-editor in praise of herself, to be sent under other names. It blames the candidate for inflaming, rather than ignoring, scurrilous rumors. And it quotes her pledging to avoid appearing on any network other than FOX PAC, referring to the rest as “the bad guys.”

Writing letters to the editor, by Palin, about Palin; no real surprise here, after all Queen Sarah is her biggest and most adoring fan; and choosing FOX PAC as her only outlet? Well those “bad guys” sure made her look bad didn’t they? That nefarious gang of journalistic thugs, how could you Katie? What were thinking asking a Vice-Presidential candidate to reveal what she reads, or which Supreme Court decisions she disagrees with?

According to Bailey, in a June 2009 e-mail, nearly a year after her disastrous interview with CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric, Palin is portrayed as still holding a grudge toward the broadcaster.

“She SUCKED in ratings before she stumbled upon her little gig mocking me,” Palin wrote, “She did almost lose her job before that VP interview …”

And she had to work so hard to trip you up Sarah. After all she gave you those really hard questions.

And what was the “hard” learned lesson Palin took away from her introduction to the national media? It was simple; ignore all television networks except for FOX PAC, which would later sign her as a contributor.

In announcing to aides her decision to speak only to FOX PAC, Palin described all the competing networks as “the bad guys.”

“Every time we participate with the bad guys we are telling viewers/readers: ‘go watch them! Tune in to what they have to say to bash us today!’ I can’t do that anymore,” Palin wrote. I am through with the idiots who use and abuse us — we can NOT win them over, I hate giving them ratings boosts.”

Palin concluded, “Lesson learned. Final one. Networks are not our friends. Talking to them harms my family, admin, record, reputation, Tripp, etc. No more.”

One chapter asserts Palin broke election law by coordinating with the Republican Governors Association during her 2006 campaign for governor. State candidates can’t team up with soft-money groups such as the Republican Governors Association, which paid for TV commercials and mailers in Alaska during the election in a purported “independent” effort, and Bailey swears the allegation was true. Palin and her aides marched along the block in front of the hotel again and again in order to allow a camera operator to capture footage for the ad, he said. “(Palin aide) Kris Perry, when orchestrating that nutty- parade at the hotel, was following the directions of the RGA cameraman and/or whomever he was working for,” Bailey wrote.

“Far worse, Sarah conducted multiple takes and knew exactly what was happening. She had, I suddenly believed, broken the law,” Bailey wrote.

Really? Queen Sarah went after “soft” money “illegally”? Was a “poser” for a commercial, with multiple takes? Palin seems to think she, and her family, are outside the rules the rest of us are hemmed in by. Is it because she sees herself in some kind of role like a Joan of Arc?

Bailey has said that her highness is an extremely paranoid individual who trusts no one, not the media, not the Democratic Party, but more especially, not even her fellow Republicans whom she attacked in a scathing e-mail in June 2009.

It seems when the GOTP couldn’t confirm that her majesty would attend a fund raising event, the TPGOP congressional campaign committees rescinded its invitation for her to speak in favor of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Palin reacted by typing a contemptuous assessment of the former speaker and the national party to her team in which she credited God for keeping her away from the Washington fundraiser.

“Yes, (Newt/GOP) are egotistical, narrow-minded machine goons … but all the more reason God protected me from getting up on stage in front of ,5000 political and media ‘elites’ to praise him, then it be shown across the nation.” Palin wrote in the e-mail.

“At some point Newt would have shown his true colors anyway and we would have been devastated having known we’d earlier prostituted ourselves up in front of the country introducing him and acting like that good ol’ rich white guy is the savior of the party,” she continued.

Palin went on to express another reason she was thankful to the Almighty that she wasn’t attending the fundraising gala.

“Plus, I had nothing to wear, and God knew that too. Party machinery sucks. I can’t tell you how much I hate it — nothing ever changes — we went through it before and after the VP campaign,” she wrote. “I’ve gone through it all my career. We just don’t fit into it, and maybe we should thank God for that.”

What kind of mean girl nonsense is this? She thinks she’s ready to be the President of the United States and she rants about how poor Cinderella had nothing to wear to the ball, and how since she was no longer the VP candidate, she had no fairy god mother to go out and buy her some more new threads? And, besides all that, God wanted to protect her from “prostituting” herself to the party elites? Too late! You walked on to that street corner when you accepted McCain’s “invitation” to be his running mate. But wait, perhaps I was too hasty in that assessment? Maybe she’s only “prostituted” herself to FOX PAC.

Pam Pryor, a spokeswoman for Palin’s political action committee, said she didn’t expect Palin to react. “Doubt she will respond to this kind of untruth,” Pryor said in an e-mail.

Yeah, right. She’ll respond to it alright, because her ego won’t allow her to sit quietly. She shouldn’t have responded to things that were said about the Tucson shooting, but she couldn’t resist. What makes any right minded person think she’ll keep mum on this? She’ll respond because it will put her mug back in front of the camera, and besides, when Sean Hannity calls she’ll run down the hall to her private FOX PAC studio screaming “Make up”!

Not Patriotic?

This picture was taken on the 6th of January. Notice anything? Neither Cantor nor Boehner are wearing US Flag lapel pins. Doesn’t that signify a lack of patriotism? Not any more. But in 2008, then candidate Obama, was raked over the goals for not wearing a US Flag lapel pin.

Over the last two years since President Obama has taken office, the federal government has added 200,000 new federal jobs?

During a 15 February 2011, press conference, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said that “over the last two years since President Barack Obama has taken office, the federal government has added 200,000 new federal jobs. And if some of those jobs are lost in this, so be it.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the official statistician for the United States labor force, the overall net rise in federal employees between January 2009 and January 2011 was 58,000. Additionally, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s on-line federal workforce data source, “FedScope,” reports the net increase of positions filled between the fiscal years 2009 and 2010, was only 59,995. Either figure is well below the 200,000 claimed by Speaker Boehner.

There’s one of two things going on here; either the Speaker is completely incompetent when it comes to rounding up numbers (not entirely impossible), or he’s a liar pulling numbers out of any number of orifices to try to back up a bogus political agenda supported by only the narrowest of far right wing Tea Party members of the GOP (extremely possible).

Far more troubling than his probable lying in order to curry favor with the great intellectually unwashed masses of the far right, is his cavalier attitude towards an additional 200,000 Americans becoming unemployed, “if some of those jobs are lost in this, so be it,” the Speaker crowed. You can almost hear – mirrored in Boehner’s words – Ebenezer Scrooge’s famous cant “If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.” One can only hope that some night soon, Boehner will find himself being visited by the Ghosts of Speakers Past, Present (no doubt the scariest of all) and future.

Romney’ “facts” lack context?

So, here’s the big question of the moment. When did the recession start? If you listen to former Massachusetts governor and GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney it started January 2009. Now obviously, the current recession began long before Barrack Obama became president, but according to Mitt, while speaking at CPAC this weekend, President Obama is at fault for the country’s current economic fall, and has been since before he was sworn in.

Romney used numbers during his “please I want to be the president” speech that were less than factual, and his staff directed reporters and pundits covering the annual conservative love fest to monthly job data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which they claim clearly shows that from January 2009 to January 2011, the number of jobs lost totaled nearly 4 million. However, the same data set shows the economy actually started losing jobs nearly 12 months before Obama took the oath of office (during the Bush/Cheney administration) – for a total of 2.3 million jobs. So, in other words boys and girls, the Romney people are deliberately misleading people on “the facts”. They are lying.

Romney’s staff begins its estimation of jobs lost beginning with January 2009 (when 820,000 jobs were lost) as part of Obama’s total, but President Obama took office on January 21, so he was president for roughly one third of the month, meaning the other two thirds belonged to Bush. If you move January to the pre-Obama period, where those figures belong in the total numbers of jobs lost, then the job losses are about 3.1 million before he took office and 3.1 million after he took office. In other words, the economy had already been driven off of the cliff. And who drove the economy off of the cliff? If your first guess was Willy Coyote and Bullwinkle Moose then while you were close, but you don’t win anything. The daring duo of economic and foreign policy missteps was none other than Bush/Cheney. You remember? The guys who “stood watch” over the worse terrorist attack on American soil, and who then launched the country into not one, but two, wars without paying for them, meaning, without raising taxes, and who then ruined not only America’s voice on the stage of world politics, but catapulted the nation’s economy into a refuse bin?

Not only were 3.1 million jobs lost before the President took office, some 2 million jobs were lost in the first three months of Obama’s presidency, long before any of his own policies had begun to take effect. And while it’s sort of true Romney doesn’t quite blame Obama, he doesn’t place blame where it belongs either. He just sort of allows his audience – vehement anti-Obama mouth breathers to begin with – to just follow him where his “facts” are taking them.

Romney’s litany of “facts” however lacks something vitally important to those not already willing to vote for him, context; and while four million is an impressive number, it is much less impressive when measured against the overall number of people employed. The GOP-Tea Party always measures everything, and everyone, against its collective hero Ronald Reagan; and while it may be true job losses during the first two years of Reagan’s presidency were fewer, when measured against the number of employed when both men took office, both saw a decline of roughly 2.3 percent in the first two years, or basically the same total. That’s if you use monthly job loss figures, as Romney’s people did in preparing his speech, and as Romney did in delivering it. When anyone who doesn’t watch FOX PAC, or listens to the daily dose of deliberately misleading right-wing radio pabulum, runs Reagan’s number using the same scale Romney attempts to hold President Obama too – the total number of people employed from month to month, guess what? Reagan actually fares worse than Obama, percentage-wise. Yes, it’s true; Reagan’s job losses were just as bad, if not worse, as Obama’s have been.

While Romney’s statement is “technically correct”, because it lacks any context, it’s meaningless. He – like all the other GOP hopefuls’- attempts to place blame upon someone who isn’t at fault. He attempts to attribute job losses to President Obama which arguably belong solely to Bush. The eventual problem with this type of strategy is, while your band of listeners is likely to never check your figures, when you use numbers, without the context, someone will come along and put it all together, and when they do you might soon discover the guy you’re trying to emulate, your hero Ronald Reagan, actually had the same – if not worse – poor showing in job losses during his opening term. Romney has started off his next run at the White House from a position of loose figures and poor context, attempting to mislead the electorate. Not a solid place to start a campaign from.

What Are the Nine Most Terrifying Words?

As we approach the 100th birthday of Ronald Reagan many conservatives are quoting him, and playing back his famous speeches, and swooning in awe at how much they think Sarah Palin is like him. Really, I’m not making that last part up, they are really swooning over how much they think Palin is like Reagan.

President Reagan famously said that the “nine most terrifying words” in his opinion were, “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”

I hate to dispute that, but, those aren’t the nine most terrifying words, the nine most terrifying words are, “I am Sarah Palin, and I want your vote.”

A conservative recently said, “What is it about Sarah Palin that scares liberals to death? That she will take away their abortions? Promote freedom? Lower taxes? Get government out of our lives? Oh ya, those are some scary things alright!”

What “scares liberals” about Palin? It’s plain and simple, she’s an idiot; nothing else, just that. I can very easily tell you one thing (as someone who knew and worked for him) she isn’t Ronald Reagan.

On Palin and all the wonderful things she’ll allegedly do.

First, Roe – v – Wade is pretty well established law in the country, and if someone runs for President claiming they’re going to overturn it they’re one of two things, either a fool, or a liar, and possibly both.

Second, how will supporting the policies of the previous administration – which is what she has said she’d do – promote freedom? Through the unconstitutional suspension of habeas corpus (constitutionally a president can only suspend habeas corpus under two circumstances; against individuals who are in rebellion – as Lincoln did during the Civil War – and against foreign invaders), torturing of prisoners, sending the country into a war with anyone who seems to oppose the U.S.? And yes, she’s said she’d attack Iran. Where is it written, previous to the Bush Doctrine – which Palin didn’t know what was – that the U.S, can do whatever it pleases anywhere in the world?

Third, she’ll lower taxes? Hey Tea Party people, and Republicans, stop whining about your huge tax burden, we currently have the lowest tax rates in a long time; much lower than your parents or grandparents lived under. We have – for a very large part – a huge debt because Bush/Cheney ignored a fundamental economic maxim and conducted wars without raising taxes. Blame the President for the country’s debt, because I know conservatives will, but don’t be obtuse about it, admit where it came from in the first place, along with the crippling economy.

And last, how will Sarah get the government out of our lives? Oh yeah, by abolishing the Dept of Ed, and the EPA, and any other government agency or regulation limiting the newly acquired constitutional liberties of big business. So, you like polluted streams and rivers, and you like that minorities, women and children with special needs would have no protections in the classroom? You don’t want federal dollars going to the infrastructure of the country? Because it doesn’t say anywhere in the Constitution that the federal government can do those things. It also doesn’t say the President can send the country off to war, that’s a power enumerated to the Congress, not the President. Why? So, we don’t get into the mess we’re currently in.

So, that’s why liberals are “scared of” Palin. And, here’s a little secret. We’re not scared of her. In the world of political reality, she’s a 10 second sound bite. I hope she runs, I really do, because if she does, she will be exposed for the moronic fraud she really is. She won’t have to worry about the President illuminating just how unprepared she is, her fellow Republicans will take care of that. Oh, and here’s another little secret, when she doesn’t win the GOP nomination, or if it looks like she might not be able to get it in the first place, she’ll probably run as the Tea Party candidate, which will take votes from which party? So, please let’s see those Palin 2012 bumper stickers, let’s see those yard signs.

Who is the Most Corrupt Woman in America?

This morning I received another happy, go-lucky, email from an 80+ year old grandmother; a woman, who is part of the “greatest generation”; a woman who my family has known and loved for many years. What is it about this past election that makes otherwise good people send these things along?

Below is the email with my comments in red:

Let’s Recap–

1. The American people elect a black president with a total of 42 days experience as a U S Senator from the most politically corrupt state in America whose governor is ousted from office. The President’s first official act is to close Gitmo and make sure terrorists civil rights are not violated. {Here we go with the race card being played again. Is it really the fact that America elected someone with so “little” experience that concerns you? Or is it the fact that he’s black? Well, seems to me it’s primarily because he’s black. Yes, Virginia, there are still racists in America today.}

2, The U.S. Congress rushes to confirm a black Attorney General, Eric Holder, whose law firm we later find out represents seventeen Gitmo Terrorists. {“Congress rushes to confirm a black Attorney General.” Oh No! Not a black Attorney General! Once more Virginia, yes honey, there are still racists in America today; on the issue that “his” law firm represents 17 Gitmo “terrorists”. After checking numerous sources I couldn’t find a single credible reference to this. And even if his law firm had represented the 17 alleged “terrorist”, so what? Except for the extreme right wing of the Republican Party, i.e., Hannity, Limbaugh, Boortz, etc., fewer and fewer people think Gitmo was a great idea.}

3. The CIA Boss, Leon Penetta with absolutely no experience, has a daughter Linda we find out, that is a true radical anti-American activist who is a supporter of all the Anti-American regimes in the western hemisphere. {Gee, how do I say this? NOT TRUE! In fact the Accuracy In Media checked this so-called claim and reported this, “…reached by telephone in Philadelphia, Linda Panetta told Accuracy in Media that while she admires Leon Panetta and that there may be a distant family connection somewhere, he is not her father and that she has never even met him.

“Not only am I not his daughter, but unfortunately I have not had the pleasure of meeting this man who has done amazing work in his lifetime,” she said. “He and my father may have been second cousins,” she acknowledged, but under no circumstances is he her father.

Despite charges or information to the contrary, she has never claimed to be his daughter. She explained, “God rest my Dad’s soul. He was an incredible individual as well. I would never in my lifetime claim to be anybody’s daughter but my father’s.”

4. We got the most corrupt female in America as Secretary of State; bought and paid for. {Hillary Clinton is the most corrupt female in America? Sorry, but right off the top of my head I can think of several other  “females” in America who are more “corrupt” than Secretary of State Clinton.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (R), who allegedly misused her powers, and took us into the Troopergate scandal, followed by her billing Alaskan tax payers for personal needs, charging per diem while living at home, and then not paying more than $15,000.00 in taxes for it, and finally taking $150,000 from the RNC for her own wardrobe? I think Sarah had the top spot all locked up. But there are also some others to consider.

Mayor of Baltimore, the Honorable Sheila Ann Dixon (D), Mayor Dixon has reportedly been indicted on twelve counts, including perjury, theft, and misconduct. The charges stem partly from incidents in which she allegedly misappropriated gift cards intended for the poor.

Former New Mexico Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R), who was listed in 2007 as one of the top 22 most corrupt members of Congress; former Congresswoman Wilson allegedly used her position in Congress in an attempt to influence an ongoing Justice Department prosecution against Democratic politicos in New Mexico.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). Sen. Murkowski’s ethics violations stem from her purchase of land in Alaska, far below the market value, and her failure to accurately disclose the transaction in her 2006 financial disclosure report.

Former Florida Congresswoman Katherine Harris (R), who was listed as one of the 20 most corrupt members of Congress in 2006. Former Congresswoman Harris was mired hip deep in the MZM pay-for-play campaign funding scandal.

5. We got a Tax Cheat for Treasury Secretary who files his own taxes.{Yes, yes, yes, Secretary Geithner failed to pay all of his taxes. However, in a statement to the Senate panel considering his nomination, Geithner openly and willingly called the tax issues “careless”, “avoidable”, and “unintentional” errors, and he said he wanted to “apologize to the committee for putting you in the position of having to spend so much time on these issues.” Geithner further testified that he prepared his own tax return and that the tax errors were his own responsibility. Secretary Geithner has subsequently paid the IRS the additional taxes owed, and was charged $15,000 interest, which he also paid. At least he admitted he had screwed up, and he took responsibility for that mistake. Please refer to the reference for Governor Sarah Palin above, it seems we almost got a tax cheat for vice-president.}

6. A Commerce Secretary nominee who withdrew due to corruption charges.

7. A Tax cheat nominee for Chief Performance Officer who withdrew under charges.

8. A Labor Sec’y nominee who withdrew under charges of unethical conduct.

9. A Sec’y HHS nominee who withdrew under charges of cheating on his taxes.

{Fine, five people nominated with problems, four of whom withdrew their nominations. Let me show you a list of the individuals from the previous administration of President George W. Bush as compiled by Paul Kiel for the Autonomous Media Network.

These individuals were indicted, convicted or plead guilty:

1. Eric G. Andell – deputy undersecretary in charge of newly created Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (previously senior adviser to Secretary of Education Rod Paige) – pleaded guilty to one count of conflict of interest for using government travel for personal causes and was sentenced to one year of probation, 100 hours of community service, and fined $5,000.

2. Claude Allen – Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy- resigned, pled guilty to shoplifting from Target stores.

3. Lester Crawford – Commissioner, FDA – resigned in late September 2005 after only two months on the job. On October 17th, he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts, making a false writing and conflict of interest. On February 27, 2007, Crawford was sentenced to two to three years of probation and was fined $90,000.

4 . Brian Doyle – Deputy Press Secretary, Department of Homeland Security – Resigned in wake of child sex scandal. Doyle was arrested on April 4th, 2006 and pleaded no contest on September 19, 2006 to seven counts of use of a computer to seduce a child and sixteen counts of transmitting harmful material to a minor. On November 17th, 2006 Brian Doyle was sentencedto five years in state prison and ten years of probation. He will also need to register as a sex offender.

* Steven Griles – Deputy Secretary at the Interior Department – is the highest-ranked administration official yet convicted in the Jack Abramoff scandal. In March 2007, Griles pleaded guilty to lying about his role in the Jack Abramoff scandal. Sentenced to 10 months incarceration.

* John T. Korsmo – Chairman of the Federal Housing Finance Board from 2002 to 2004 – pleaded guilty in 2005 to lying to the Senate and an inspector general. He swore he had no idea how a list of presidents for FHFB-regulated banks were invited to a fundraiser for his friend’s congressional campaign. On the invites, Korsmo was listed as the “Special Guest.” Got 18 months of probation and a $5,000 fine.

* Scooter Libby – Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff – resigned after being indicted for lying to a grand jury and investigators in connection with the investigation stemming from the leak of Valerie Wilson’s covert CIA operative’s identity. Convicted on four of five counts, making him the highest-ranking White House official to be convicted of a felony since the Iran-contra scandal. Sentenced to thirty months imprisonment and a fine of $250,000. On July 2nd, after a judge decided that Libby would remain in prison during the appeals process, President Bush commuted Libby’s sentence by removing the thirty months in prison.

* David Safavian – former head of the Office of Federal Procurement Policy at the Office of Management and Budget – convicted of lying to ethics officials and Senate investigators about his ties to lobbyist Jack Abramoff. On October 27, 2006, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison. He is currently appealing the ruling.

* Robert Stein – former comptroller and funding officer for the now disbanded Coalition Provisional Authority, Southern Central Region in Al-Hillah, Iraq – pleaded guilty to conspiracy, bribery, conspiracy to commit money laundering, possession of a machine gun, and being a felon in possession of a fire arm. On January 30, 2007 Stein was sentenced to nine years in prison and ordered to forfeit $3.6 million.

* Roger Stillwell – desk officer, Interior Department – pleaded guilty to failing to report Redskins tickets and free dinners from Jack Abramoff.

Resigned Due to Investigation, Pending Investigation or Allegations of Impropriety

* Philip Cooney – chief of staff, White House Council on Environmental Quality – a former oil industry lawyer with no scientific expertise, Cooney resigned after it was revealed he had watered down reports on global warming.

* George Deutsch – press aide, NASA – resigned amid allegations he prevented the agency’s top climate scientist from speaking publicly about global warming.

* Michael Elston – chief of staff to Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty – announced his resignation on June 15, 2007. Despite allegations that he’d threatened at least four of the eight fired US Attorneys, McNulty said Elston had served the Justice Department “with distinction for nearly eight years.”

* Kyle Dustin “Dusty” Foggo – appointed executive director of the CIA, the agency’s third-highest post, in October 2004 – resigned and was ultimately indicted on bribery charges related to the Duke Cunningham scandal.

* Alberto Gonzales – former Attorney General – resigned without explanation amidst investigations of the firings of U.S. Attorneys, the politicization of the Justice Department, warrantless surveillance, and the torture and mistreatment of detainees.

* Monica Goodling – former Justice Department liaison to the White House and senior counsel to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales – resigned on April 7, 2007 amidst the investigation of the firings of U.S. Attorneys.

* Michelle Larson Korsmo – deputy chief of staff, Department of Labor – Helped her husband (see John Korsmo, above) with his donor scam. Quietly left her Labor plum job in February 2004, about two weeks before news broke that she and her husband were the targets of a criminal probe.

* Howard “Cookie” Krongard – former State Department inspector general — accused of not properly investigating State Department contractor fraud in Iraq and Afghanistan; of retaliating against whistleblowers in his own office; and of not telling the truth about his knowledge of his brother’s ties with Blackwater, a State Department contractor. Faced with a possible perjury investigation, Howard Krongard resigned on December 7, 2007.

* Julie Macdonald – former deputy assistant secretary for fish, wildlife and parks at the Interior Department – resigned in May 2007 after an “inspector general’s report found she had improperly leaked information to private organizations, bullied staff scientists and broken federal rules.” The Department of the Interior is investigating many of her decisions regarding endangered species; so far seven have been overturned.

* Paul McNulty – Deputy Attorney General for the Department of Justice – resigned, after questions about his involvement in the U.S. attorney firings and his testimony to Congress about the firings.

* Richard Perle – Chairman, Defense Policy Board – resigned from Pentagon advisory panel amid conflict-of-interest charges.

* Susan Ralston – assistant, White House – resigned amidst revelations that she had accepted thousands of dollars in gifts from Abramoff without compensating him, counter to White House ethics rules.

* Janet Rehnquist – inspector general, Department of Health and Human Services – resigned on June 1, 2003 in the face of an investigation into her alleged efforts to block a politically dangerous probe on behalf of the Bush family.

* James Roche – secretary, U.S. Air Force – resigned in the wake of the Boeing tanker lease scandal, after it was revealed he had rather crudely pushed for Boeing to win a $23 billion contract.

* Kyle Sampson -former chief of staff for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales – resigned amidst the investigation of the firings of U.S. Attorneys.

* Joseph Schmitz – Inspector General, Defense – Resigned amid charges he personally intervened to protect top political appointees.

* Bradley Schlozmanresigned from his third and final post with the Justice Department after accusations of actively politicizing the department. He’s currently under investigation by the Department’s inspector general.

* Thomas Scully – Administrator, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services – shortly after Scully resigned in 2003, an investigation by the Department of Health and Human Services inspector general found that Scully had pressured the agency’s actuary to underestimate the full cost of the Medicare reform bill by approximately $100 billion until after Congress passed the bill into law. Scully was also hit with conflict of interest charges by the U.S. attorney’s office for billing CMS for expenses incurred during a job search while he still headed the agency. He settled those charges by paying $9,782.

* David Smith – deputy assistant secretary for fish, wildlife, and parks, Interior Department – resigned on July 21, 2006 after shooting a buffalo and accepting its skeletal remains and meat as an illegal gratuity. He eventually paid over $3,000 for the dead buffalo, but only after the internal inquiry had commenced. The Department of Interior inspector general also noted in a May 16, 2006 report that Smith’s involvement in the designation of Houston as a port of entry for imported wildlife in order to benefit a friend was inappropriate.

* John Tanner – Voting Rights Section Chief, Justice Department – resigned in December of 2007 and moved to the Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices. Already under suspicion for aiding efforts to politicize the voting section, the bumbling proponent of voter identification laws angered lawmakers with his comments that such laws actually discriminate against white voters because “minorities die first”. Even more impressive was his apology for the comment. The DoJ’s Office of Professional Responsibility is currently investigating his travel habits and those of his deputy.

* Sara Taylor – Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Political Affairs at the White House, where she was Karl Rove´s top aide – resigned amidst the U.S. attorneys investigation and other probes of Rove´s alleged politicization of the government.

* Ken Tomlinson – Board Chairman, Corporation for Public Broadcasting; member, Broadcasting Board of Governors – resigned at the release of an inspector general report concluding he had broken laws in spending CPB money to hire politically connected consultants to search for “bias” without consulting the board. At BBG, a separate investigation found he was running a “horse racing operation” out of his office, and continuing to hire politically-wired individuals to do “consulting” work for him. After being nominated and serving another term, he finally stepped down from that spot earlier this year.

* Carl Truscott – Director, Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Bureau – resigned. A report by the Justice Department’s inspector general found that Truscott wasted tens of thousands of dollars on luxuries, wasted millions on whimsical management decisions and violated ethics rules by ordering employees to help his nephew with a high school video project.

* Paul Wolfowitz – World Bank President – resigned in May 2007 after a committee report found that he broke ethics rules by giving his girlfriend a substantial raise.

Nomination Failed Due to Scandal

* Linda Chavez – nominated, Secretary of Labor – withdrew her nomination in January 2001 amidst revelations that an illegal immigrant lived in her home and worked for her in the early 1990s. Chavez blamed what she said were the “search-and-destroy” politics of Washington.

* Timothy Flanigan – nominated, Deputy Attorney General (also Alberto Gonzales’ top deputy at the White House) – withdrew his nomination in October 2005 amidst revelations that he’d worked closely with lobbyist Jack Abramoff when he was General Counsel for Corporate and International Law at Tyco, which was a client of Abramoff’s.

* Bernard Kerik – nominated, Secretary, Department of Homeland Security – withdrew his nomination amidst a host of corruption allegations. Eventually pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor relating to improper gifts totaling tens of thousands of dollars while he was a New York City official in the late 1990’s. Subsequently, on November 8, 2007, Kerik was indicted on sixteen counts for bribery, tax fraud, and false statements with a maximum sentence of 142 years and more than $5 million in fines. Kerik has pleaded not guilty. For a rundown of Kerik’s myriad indiscretions, check out TPM’s Ultimate Kerik Scandal List!.

* William Mercer – the former associate deputy attorney general and US Attorney for Montana – withdrew his nomination to be the permanent number three official at the Department of Justice on June 22, 2007 due to his role in the U.S. attorney firings.

* Hans von Spakovsky – Commissioner, FEC – nomination to another term after his recess appointment failed due to allegations that he’d worked at the Justice Department to suppress minority voter turnout.

Investigated at the end of the Bush Administration

* Stuart Bowen – Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction (SIGIR) – was once admired for his successes while investigating allegations of waste and fraud in Iraq, but now employee allegations have prompted four government investigations into the Office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction (SIGIR).

* Lurita Doan – Administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration – still in office, despite investigations by both the Office of Special Counsel and the House oversight committee that found that Doan had “crossed the line” by suggesting that the GSA use its resources to help Republicans get elected.

* Alfonso Jackson – Secretary of Housing and Urban Development – following reports that Jackson told a business group in April 2006 that he once canceled a contract after the contractor criticized President Bush, an investigation by the HUD inspector general found that while Jackson told his deputies to favor Bush supporters, there was “no direct proof that a contract was actually awarded or rescinded because of political affiliation.” A second, criminal investigation was triggered in part by Jackson’s claim before Congress in May 2007 that “I don’t touch contracts.” That probe, now before a federal grand jury, has turned up evidence that Jackson may indeed have touched contracts – and steered them towards friends.

I think I’ve made my point. Those who live in glass political houses should not cast stones.
