Only in Texas…

OKRA

According to the Huffington Post, “A small organic farm in Arlington, Texas, was the target of a massive police action last week that included aerial surveillance, a SWAT raid and a 10-hour search.

“Members of the local police raiding party had a search warrant for marijuana plants, which they failed to find at the Garden of Eden farm. But farm owners and residents who live on the property told a Dallas-Ft. Worth NBC station that the real reason for the law enforcement exercise appears to have been code enforcement. The police seized ’17 blackberry bushes, 15 okra plants, 14 tomatillo plants … native grasses and sunflowers,’ after holding residents inside at gunpoint for at least a half-hour, property owner Shellie Smith said in a statement. The raid lasted about 10 hours, she said.”

I understand not liking okra, or other vegetables, but raiding organic farms is not the answer, unless of course Texas law enforcement was protecting young people from the influence of this gateway vegetable? One can almost hear some local Texas sheriff drawl, “They start using okra today, and tomorrow they might be hooked on cauliflower, or even spinach.”

Ohio Tea Party member demonstrates level of racism in movement – unveils Confederate flag at school board meeting, makes intolerant comments

According to news reports, people living in the Springboro, Ohio School District are upset after a local tea party member unfurled a Confederate flag at a school board meeting and made racist comments, while – of all things – attending the meeting to “speak about summer Constitution classes”.

confederate tea bagger

Sonny Thomas, who according to a Springboro Tea Party group’s website, is its president and founder, went to the meeting because Springboro’s School Board had cancelled the classes because of allegations the curriculum had “religious undertones” and were “tea party leaning.” Both of course would be justifiable reasons for the board to act as it had – something called “separation of church and state,” especially since many in the Tea Party seem incapable of separating itself from wanting to establish a Christian theocracy, or a Christian version of Shariah law in the United States.

One of the groups “sponsoring” the classes is the Institute of the Constitution, which declares in its Mission statement, “There is an Almighty, Everlasting, Omniscient God – the God of the Bible – Who is active in the affairs of men.

“Our rights, including our right to life, liberty and property come from Him.

“It is the duty of civil government to secure, protect and defend these God given rights, to acknowledge out Creator, glorify Him and make Him known; and when civil government becomes destructive of these God given purposes, it is our duty to alter or abolish such Godless government.”

Yeah, the School Board was more than a little justified in cancelling the so-called “classes” from a group which openly declares the “duty of civil government to secure, protect and defend these God given rights, to acknowledge out Creator, glorify Him and make Him known” and advocates the overthrow of the Federal government if it fails to meet the groups expectations. The group is right-wing uber-Christian at best, and a nest of traitors at worse. yes, anyone who calls for the overthrow of the government is a traitor, not a patriot.

Sonny, whose feelings are well known in the community through his racist tweets, claimed he was there to defend the Constitution classes, but then, according to sources, let his mask down and began making racist comments and endorsing the League of the South, an organization advocating secession, state’s rights, and which calls the federal government an “enemy of the people”. At the end of his speech he unfurled a Confederate flag and asked the audience if they were offended.

It’s always interesting when these “good ol’ boys” proclaim a love for the Constitution while advocating the overthrow of the country and the legitimacy of nullification and secession.

One witness, William Cunningham, wrote about the incident on the Facebook page Springboro United for Responsible Education saying, “If the discussion in the community has come down to some man waving the ‘stars and bars’ during a public forum on education while shouting, ‘This is your heritage!’ at the audience is not only appalling, it is downright awful.’”

How is the Confederate battle flag the “heritage” of Ohio? Mr. Thomas needs to read some history. Ohio remained part of the Union during the Civil War raising more than 250,000 troops, and supplying millions of tons of supplies and materials to preserve the Union, as well as being the home state of Union Generals Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman and Philip H. Sheridan.

By-the-way, Sonny, Ohio also played a key role in the Underground Railroad – having more safe houses than any other community in the state – ferrying escaped slaves north into Canada; and incidentally, in case you haven’t noticed, Springboro isn’t exactly in the southern end of the state.

Tea Party members are always claiming the group isn’t racist, that it appeals to people of all races, colors, creeds and religions, and yet we keep seeing basically all-white audiences, racist signs, Confederate flags and calls for secession and the preservation of “states rights”. The preponderance of evidence suggests the majority of the group is racist, and it is anything but patriotic. Calling for secession, or the overthrow of the democratically elected government is not patriotic. Personally, I’m tired of the tantrums and the threats; please rise up and start your “rebellion”. The sooner you do, the sooner those of us who have sworn an oath to defend the Constitution can do so, and the sooner the rest of us can move on with real issues and problems our county is facing. In other words, “Put up, or shut up”.

Conservatives prove once again why we have protections under the First Amendment

Thank You Republican/Tea Party types for making my point as to why DOMA and Prop 8 were unconstitutional; if your opposition to same-sex marriage and banning it by law is based on your religious values then those laws are clearly unconstitutional under the separation of Church and State provisions of the First Amendment.

Bill Armistead, Chairman of the Republican Party in Alabama

Armistead

“I am disappointed to learn that SCOTUS has struck down DOMA and will now require that federal benefits be extended to homosexual couples.  This is an affront to the Christian principles that this nation was founded on.  The federal government is hijacking marriage, a uniquely religious institution, and they must be stopped.  This is a nation founded on Christian values and the Bible is very clear on marriage – one man and one woman.  Alabama’s state law banning gay marriage will prevent these benefits from being extended in Alabama, but our tax dollars will still go to support a lifestyle that we fundamentally disagree with.”

Of course any student of the Bible knows that Armistead’s views on marriage being between “one man and one woman” are not even close to true. In Genesis chapter 16 we read that Sarai gives her hand maid Hagar to Abram as his wife; Sarai was Abram’s first wife and by giving him Hagar she created a plural marriage.

In Genesis 25 we learn that Abram – now Abraham – takes another wife, this one’s name is Keturah. Let’s see, so far that makes three wives in this plurality.

In Genesis 30 Jacob marries Bilhah and Zilpah after already being married to Leah and Rachel. Seems like the Biblical definition of marriage being between “one man and one woman” isn’t quite so clear, now is it? Perhaps Mr. Armistead should pay a little more attention in Sunday school.

In Deuteronomy 21 the inheritance rights of children born into a plural marriage are established.

In Samuel 2 we read how David took his two wives, Ahinoam and Abigail with him when he went to Hebron.

In 1 Kings 11 we learn that Solomon had 700 wives – 700!

In 2 Chronicles 13 we can read how Abijah had fourteen wives.

“My thoughts on the SCOTUS ruling that determined that same sex marriage is okay: “Jesus wept.”

And this would be? Jesus wept because the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the Constitution? Of course He did Mike, of course He did; whatever. If Jesus is weeping it’s more likely because of the hate being spewed in His name by so-called Christians like yourself, and less likely based upon the Court’s decision to allow people freedom of choice in whom they will marry.

Congresswoman Michelle Bachman

Michele_Bachmann_02_FeaturedEffects_1

This decision is one that is profound because the Supreme Court not only attacked our Constitution today, they not only attacked the equal protection rights of every citizen under our Constitution, they attacked something that they have no jurisdiction over whatsoever, the foundational unit of our society, which is marriage.

“That is something that God created. That is something that God will define. The Supreme Court, though they may think so, have not risen to the level of God.”

How did the Court attack the Constitution? Was it by upholding it?

Marriage, by-the-way Congresswoman, IS regulated by the state, and hence the Court certainly DOES have jurisdiction over it.

And, since laws in this nation aren’t supposed to founded on the religious whims of fanatics like the soon to be retired Bachman, pointing out that her views of the legality of DOMA and Prop 8 are strictly religious in nature she helps make both mine and the Court’s point.

Senator Rand Paul

“If you change one variable — man and a woman to man and man, and woman and woman — you cannot then tell me that, you can’t logically tell me you can’t change the other variable — one man, three women.  Uh, one woman, four men…. If I’m a devout Muslim and I come over here and I have three wives, who are you to say if I’m an American citizen, that I can’t have multiple marriages?  I think this is the conundrum and gets back to what you were saying in the opening — whether or not churches should decide this. But it is difficult because if we have no laws on this people take it to one extension further.  Does it have to be humans?”

Attacking the rulings from the point of view that it might lead to polygamy, and of course the inevitable far-right white bread Christian leap that it will lead to people marrying animals, which is such a leap it doesn’t deserve to be answered. But of course he couldn’t resist the dig at Islam, throwing out the fear card that this will lead to a Muslim state of polygamous Shariah law. His fear of course is that the First Amendment would, and in all reality should, protect the right of the Islamic belief of plural marriage, being a religious tenant. Funny how religion in America to these types only extends to their own narrow views of Christianity.

Umbrellagate – one more nothing from the lips of white bread conservatives

This week another scandal reared its ugly head in right-wing world – the President of the United States demonstrated yet again his utter disdain for America’s fighting men when he had the unmitigated gall to ask U.S. Marines to hold umbrellas for himself and the Prime Minister of Turkey.

Obama-Umbrella

“No other President would ever so blatantly disrespect an American in uniform”, they cried; oh really?

bush-bush-umbrella

How about two Presidents, both conservative, father and son, at the same time?

Fact is there’s nothing wrong, or disrespectful, with Marines or Soldiers holding an umbrella for their Commander-in-Chief, and only a moron, who doesn’t understand military protocol would ever think so.
