Mittens doesn’t worry about the poor?

Republican Tea Party (GOTP) presidential heir apparent Willard Mittens Romney has put his silver foot in his mouth again, saying that he’s “not concerned about the very poor,” citing the social safety net in place for that segment of the populace and adding that he’s focused on the middle class.

“I’m in this race because I care about Americans. I’m not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there,” Mittens said on CNN, following his victory in the Florida primary.

“We have a very ample safety net,” said Romney. “And we can talk about whether it needs to be strengthened or whether there are holes in it. But we have food stamps, we have Medicaid, we have housing vouchers, we have programs to help the poor.”

This sounds very familiar, where have I heard another rich man say something similar? Oh yeah, I remember.

“Are there no prisons?”

“And the union workhouses – are they still in operation?”

The problem is that programs in Mitten’s “safety net” are also suffering during the economic recession. Medicaid, for example faces cuts as states attempt to balance budgets at a time when more people are using the program and the GOTP lawmakers in Congress are eyeing cuts in food stamps as food prices rise, even as more Americans are using the program.

According to the Huffington Post, Mitten’s policies call for cutting federal spending and reconfiguring the “social safety net”, as well as an immediate five-percent cut to non-discretionary spending, hitting those in the “safety net” especially hard. Willard’s also proposing turning Medicaid into a block grant program and undertaking a “fundamental restructuring of government programs and services.” He also calls for capping spending at 20 percent of GDP – a significant cut – and adds that he “will pursue further cuts” as spending comes “under control.” Claiming not to “worry” for the very poor actually appears to mean he “doesn’t care” about them.

This though isn’t the first obtuse thing Mittens has said during the campaign, it’s really just one more misstatement in a whole season of previously poorly phrased remarks, “Don’t try and stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom,” he said last October in Las Vegas, the hardest-hit metro area by the foreclosure crisis.

In January, Romney said, “I like being able to fire people who provide services to me” to explain why he favored competition among health insurers. “If someone doesn’t give me the good service I need, I want to say I am going to get somebody else to provide that service to me.”

Mittens isn’t someone who should ever speak without prepared statements; in fact, if I were a handler, I’d rather have George W. Bush speaking off the cuff than having Romney do so. He just doesn’t get it; he doesn’t understand every mic is hot, and every time he speaks there’s going to be a camera recording. On top of that, his statements reveal what kind of man he really is – maybe one day he’ll have a Jacob Marley visit him too.

Is Newton going rogue in 2012 election?

Is it possible the time is fast approaching when the Tea Party is going to actually jump ship and splinter the Republican Party?

It appears Newton Leroy Gingrich gave a veiled threat of such a possibility in his “concession” speech after being absolutely pummeled by Willard Mittens Romney in Florida (Newt lost by 14 points). During the speech there appeared to be, what the Huffington Post is reporting as “strains of what could be an independent, third-party run for the White House if he doesn’t get the Republican nomination”.

Newton’s beginning to sound more and more like a B-movie villain monologuing on how he’s henceforth not running a “Republican campaign but a people’s campaign” – and raising, according to Huffington, “the specter, at least rhetorically, that his vision of his role in American history is too large and personal to be contained by a mere political party”. If really wants to pull this off though he needs to buy a really ugly hairless Sphinx cat and call it Mr. Bigglesworth. Wearing the silver jump suit is of course optional.

But can Dr Strangepuff really pull off a third party victory? Well, let me think … (try to stop laughing hysterically … wipe tears from eyes …) no. If Teddy Roosevelt couldn’t do it this overinflated egotistical caricature of a human being certainly won’t be able to; what he will do is siphon off the uber-conservative cracker vote from Mittens, and propel President Obama to the largest landslide victory since Reagan.

To his crowd of ardent followers Newt pledged in an allusion to the Founding Fathers and the Declaration of Independence, “If I become your president, I pledge to you my life, my fortune and my sacred honor.”

Any candidate should know better than to pledge things they either have no intention of giving or lack; Newton has no intention of ever putting his life on the line, this is all about claiming a foot note in history next to Teddy and Ross Perot; he’s also certainly not going to part with his fortune; lastly, it’s a pie crust promise to pledge honor when you possess none.

There’s a very strong chance Gingrich will run as an independent because he has to leave the 2012 stage as something more than the right-wing nut job buffoon who got his clock cleaned by the likes of Romney, and it’s much better to go down as the independent candidate in the general election than the second banana in the GOTP primary, especially if you drag Mittens down with you. Yes, he’s that mean, and that egotistical.

Oh, you should probably be prepared for more allusions of Newt being today’s William Wallace, George Washington and Robert E. Lee.

Latest 2012 Presidential Polls – 30 Jan 12 (pre-Florida Primary) Edition

After spinning wildly down the track following the South Carolina Primary, the Republican Tea Party (GOTP) nominating circus, specifically the GOTP clown car, appears to be spinning back into Mitten’s favor; but can Romney pull out the nomination in the long run? Newton’s claiming he’s in it all the way to the convention – time will tell.

The current regular season records for the remaining four GOTP candidates are Gingrich 1, Santorum 1, Romney 1 and Paul 0; never have three separate candidates won the first three GOTP caucuses/primaries – NEVER; clearly the party doesn’t want Mitt, but can’t decide who it wants instead of him. Do they go with the crazy uncle in the attic, the over-the-top gay bashing brother, or the adulterer?

Concerning Florida’s Primary, a new Insider Advantage poll of likely voters conducted 29 Jan 12 has been released and the current poll results are: Romney 36; Gingrich 31; Paul 13 and Santorum 11 with 9% undecided.

There’s nothing new no new polls for the upcoming Nevada Caucus (4 Feb 12) where Romney led in the last Las Vegas Review-Journal poll of registered voters conducted 12 – 20 Dec 11: Romney 33; Gingrich 29; Paul 13 and Santorum 3 with 22% undecided.

The Maine Caucus’ (4 Feb 12) last PPP (D) poll of registered voters conducted 28 – 31 Oct 11: Romney 24, Gingrich 18, Paul 5 and Santorum 2 with 51% undecided.

Colorado Caucus (7 Feb 12) last PPP (D) poll of registered voters conducted 1 – 4 Dec 11: Gingrich 37; Romney 18; Paul 6 and Santorum 4 with 38% undecided.

Minnesota Caucus (7 Feb 12) last PPP (D) poll of likely voters conducted 21 – 22 Jan 12: Gingrich 36; Romney 18; Santorum 17 and Paul 13 with 16% undecided.

Michigan Primary (28 Feb 12) last EPIC-MRA poll of likely voters conducted 21 – 25 Jan 12: Romney 31; Gingrich 26; Paul 14 and Santorum 10 with 19% undecided.

Arizona Primary (28 Feb 12) last PPP (D) poll of registered voters conducted 17 – 20 Nov 11: Gingrich 28; Romney 23; Paul 8 and Santorum 3 with 38% undecided.

Super Tuesday (6 Mar 12)

Georgia Primary Mason-Dixon poll of likely voters conducted 12 – 14 Dec 11: Gingrich 43; Romney 21; Paul 4 and Santorum 1 with 31% undecided.

Ohio Primary Quinnipiac poll of registered voters conducted 9 – 16 Jan 12: Romney 27; Santorum 18; Gingrich 17 and Paul 10 with 28% undecided.

Virginia Primary (where only Romney is on the ballot – can you spell FIX?) Quinnipiac poll of registered voters conducted 13 – 19 Dec 11: Gingrich 30; Romney 25; Paul 9 and Santorum 3 with 33% undecided.

Oklahoma Primary Sooner Poll of registered voters conducted 17 Nov – 16 Dec 11: Gingrich 33; Romney 14; Paul 4 and Santorum 2 with 47% undecided.

Massachusetts Primary PPP (D) poll of registered voters conducted 16 – 18 Sep 11: Romney 50; Gingrich and Paul 5 and Santorum 1 with 44% undecided

Vermont Primary PPP (D) poll of registered voters conducted 28 – 31 Jul 11: Romney 26; Paul 7 and Gingrich 6 with 61% undecided

The Current GOTP Delegate Count is: Gingrich 23; Romney 13; Santorum 6 and Paul 3.

Nationally the GOTP Nomination according to the latest Gallup Tracking poll of registered voters conducted 25 – 29 Jan 12: Gingrich 28; Romney 27; Santorum 16 and Paul 13 with 16% undecided.

So, how does each of the Four Horseman of the GOPocalypse stack up against the President? The latest Rasmussen Reports poll of likely voters conducted 27 – 29 Jan 12, if the general election were held today:

President Obama 47/Romney 41

President Obama 52/Gingrich 35

A new USA Today/Gallup poll conducted 27 – 28 Jan 12:

President Obama 51/Santorum 43

President Obama 49/Paul 46

As crazy as it looks, clearly, on the electability scale Paul is the candidate who comes closest to actually being able to beat the President. That being said, if the GOTP clown car had finally stopped spinning, and the general election was held today, Newton Leroy Gingrich would barely be the GOTP nominee, and he’d lose to President Obama in the general election.

Speaking of the general election; the latest Electoral College figures are below, based on current available state polling, and once again, if the general election was held today these would be the results:

Daddy cancels campaign trip to Florida to be with his little girl

The Associated Press (AP) is reporting that Rick Santorum is staying home in Philadelphia to be with this hospitalized daughter and is canceling campaign stops in Florida.

Santorum’s campaign says the former senator will stay in Pennsylvania with 3-year-old Bella, who has a genetic condition known as Trisomy 18. The condition typically proves fatal and Santorum often says his daughter wasn’t expected to live past 12 months.

Spokesman Hogan Gidley says Santorum hopes to return to a campaign schedule soon.

Santorum canceled his appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” and a stop at a Miami church.

This is “family values” to me, no hyperbole, no bombastic speeches, just a devoted daddy staying with his little girl; thoughts and prayers for the Santorum’s and for little Bella.

David Johnson

An Army officer from Mayville, Wis., has been killed in action in Afghanistan, his family said in a news release Thursday.

Family members said the military informed them Wednesday night of the death 1LT David Johnson, 24.

The U.S. Department of Defense said later Thursday that Johnson was on foot patrol Wednesday when an improvised explosive device exploded and fatally wounded him.

Johnson, a platoon leader, was assigned to the Army’s 5th Battalion; 20th Infantry Regiment; 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team; 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.

“We are very proud of our son,” said the release from the soldier’s parents, Andrew and Laura Johnson. “He is a hero. He first was a man of God. He has been a strong leader at Mayville High School, at Evangel University and to the men in his unit. David had no fear of adversity; he lived life to the fullest. There are no regrets. He is an American hero. We love him very much and miss him very much.”

Andrew Johnson is publisher of the Dodge County Pioneer in Mayville, in southeastern Wisconsin.

The community has been hit hard by news of the death, said Katie Leb, an acquaintance of David Johnson and editor of the newspaper.

“In this town, the Johnson family is well-known and well-loved, and to lose David has saddened everyone,” Leb said Thursday. “Everyone here was tremendously proud of him and what he did for our country.”

Johnson joined the Army soon after graduating from high school in 2006 and was a leader in the ROTC during college, Leb said.

Johnson’s family was traveling to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, where the soldier’s remains were being sent.

Johnson was a 2011 graduate of Evangel University in Springfield, Mo., a school his brother Michael attends. Campus pastor John Plake said David was the oldest of four siblings. He had two brothers and a sister.

1LT Johnson is the 1,888th American to die in Afghanistan … Ich hatt’ einen Kameraden

Secret Service Probe Photo of Shot-Up Obama Shirt

According to NBC News, the Secret Service has launched an investigation into – of all places Peoria, Arizona to be precise, Police SGT Pat Shearer, a highly decorated officer, uploaded a picture on his Facebook page showing seven young men holding up a shirt with President Barack Obama’s face on it riddled with bullet holes.

The photo was uploaded to Facebook on 20 Jan 12 complete with the caption, “Another trip to the ranch,” and  was quickly removed, after the Secret Service showed up and started asking about it.

“We’re aware of it, and we’re conducting the appropriate follow-up steps,” Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan told The New York Times.

The Peoria Police Department has also mounted its own internal probe into the photo.

“We have a social media policy that addresses employee conduct with respect of the use of social media,” Jay Davies, a spokesman for the department, told Arizona CBS affiliate KPHO.

He reportedly said Shearer would remain on duty while the investigation is carried out to determine whether his actions violate the department’s social media policy.

Shearer – not surprisingly – is saying the imagery of the picture is being taken out of context.

“I don’t think that the shooting of that t-shirt is that big of a deal. … I think it was more of a political statement,” Shearer told Arizona’s ABC15. “Obviously, it’s not like they were going to go out and shoot the president, no.”

Exactly what kind of “political statement” does SGT Shearer think he’s making? He has a group of what appears to be white teens, holding automatic weapons and pistols, with a t-shirt bearing the first Black President’s image shot full of bullets holes; just some good old white boys out shooting? The only possible “political statement” to be construed here is that you want the President assassinated; because, I’m sorry, but this isn’t something anyone – especially a police officer – jokes about.

On top of that, considering this is Arizona – the same state where they just lost one of their members of Congress (Gabbi Giffords) due to injuries sustained in an assassination attempt which left six dad and more than a dozen wounded – this is a very BIG deal. There’s a huge question here about Shearer’s judgment, and that should be a concern for the community he serves; but wait, what am I thinking? This is the home state of Sherriff Joe, and the OK Corral.

The Secret Service should investigate, and Shearer should resign or be fired. This is a big deal; it isn’t harmless fun. I think it’s safe to guess which political party Shearer and his teen minions are members of, Tea anyone?

Why would your wife make a good First Lady?

With all the problems facing the United States today it was such a comfort to turn on the CNN debate last night and to see Wolf Blitzer was the moderator, and what’s more to see him ask such valid, timely and thought provoking questions. My particular favorite was the question which came right after Rick Santorum complained about the nonsense questions being asked. And what was this question? Wolf wanted to know why the candidate’s wives would make a good first lady.

Riveting Wolf, riveting … did you fall out of the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way to the ground? A young woman who was unemployed with no health insurance had just minutes before asked the so-called candidates what they would do for her – of course none of them answered her question; I’ll bet she was waiting on pins and needles to find out the answer to that truly valid question.

I suddenly found myself wistfully wishing Michele Bachmann was still in the race.

Of course we got to hear all the wonderful qualifications of the candidate’s wives, how they’d raised hundreds of children while still finding time to establish world class music schools, baking cookies for orphans and working down at the USO Stage Door Canteen; and of all the husbands no one was more gushing over with praise than Newt for his current spouse (number 3), and former paramour, Callista.

All I could think was, “First Mistress anyone?”

I’m sorry, but Newt’s former concubine turned wife as First Lady?

I know, perhaps they could hire Heidi Fleiss to be her social secretary?

Enough of Newt pretending his concern about “family values” and how much he’s a devoted husband, and how his past indiscretions should be forgotten because he’s found religion and is now a good boy – at least as long as Callista stays healthy.

This isn’t only about Newt’s infidelity it’s also about a former staffer (Callista) being the Speaker’s mistress before he “made a proper woman out of her”. Both of their morals leave a great deal to be desired, and women who sleep their way to the top – sort of speak – are not called “First Lady,” a term which implies, well, first and foremost, that they’re a lady.

This isn’t “Pretty Woman” where the young call girl is turning tricks to survive and can be forgiven as she is introduced to the finer things in life and over time becomes a lady; this is about a Congressional staffer who graduated cum laude from college knowing exactly what she was doing when she became the modern day Madame de Pompadour to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the person second in line in succession to the President.

Yes sir, Newt and Callista, quite the poster couple for fidelity and family values.

One last thought on this happy couple; why is it Republicans have no issue with a former Speaker who was having not just one, but multiple affairs – in the capitol – with staffers, while serving in office as a “family values” conservative, but they pilloried – and continue to pillory – President Clinton for having an affair in the Oval Office, with a staffer? “It’s not about his affair, it’s that he lied about it” is what conservatives say when asked. Bunk; it’s about the double standard of the conservative Christian right, the “family values” party. I have a problem with someone who is, or who has been, an adulterer holding any public office because they’re untrustworthy; it’s as simple as that; wedding vows are an oath, a covenant every bit as binding as an oath of office. If a man can’t keep one oath why should he be trusted to keep the other?

Hypocrisy thy name is the Republican Tea Party; Newt was a dreadful Speaker he would make an equally horrendous President.
